Taking Fat From The Cheek Region For A More Sculpted Face

Create a more contoured facial structure, reducing plumpness on the cheeks for a streamlined look.

Dr. Adam Najem’s buccal fat pad removal can create a more contoured facial structure, reducing plumpness on the cheeks for a streamlined look.

What is buccal fat pad removal?

The buccal (taken from the Latin word for ‘cheek’) fat pads are fatty deposits in the cheeks, though they extend to the temples and back of the upper jaw. This serves a key natural purpose in infants, aiding the nursing process. In adults, the buccal fat pad assists movement of the jaw muscles.

However, in later life the buccal fat pad can lead to disproportionately round cheeks, leaving patients feeling self-conscious about their appearance. Buccal fat pad removal involves taking fat from the cheek region for a more sculpted face.

What does buccal fat pad removal involve?

Buccal fat pad removal begins with an incision (measuring around two or four centimetres) in the mouth, towards the rear of the buccal area. ( the incision done through the mouth ( no scar on the outside of the cheeks)

Both of these grant access to the buccal fat pad, which is pushed through this opening. This is removed carefully, before tissue is cut from the pad according to the look desired.

Things to do and not do do :

Certain steps can help to prepare your body for the procedure:

  • Quit smoking (as this may affect your recovery process)
  • Avoid aspirins and ibuprofens as these thin the blood
  • You may be advised to add more protein to your diet, as this can stimulate your body’s healing ability
  • Soft diet for the next days after surgery

How long will the buccal fat pad removal take?

The buccal fat pad removal procedure usually takes approximately 60 minutes. Times may vary as each case is different, but Dr. Najem will provide an accurate length during consultation.

The buccal fat pad removal may be performed alongside other facial rejuvenation treatments (such as facelift or eyelid surgery, vaser liposuction ..etc ), and the entire process may take longer as a result.

What will the recovery period involve?

The recovery period for buccal fat pad removal is usually brief. There may be some discomfort, but this can be managed with pain medication for the duration of your recuperation.

You will need to eat soft foods for the initial three or five days, and rinse your mouth out afterwards. Patients can typically return to work after a week of rest, but all strenuous activities or sports must be avoided for around two months.

During your recovery, you have to avoid eating foods with sharp edges or acidic ingredients (such as citrus fruits). These can aggravate the incisions and cause more discomfort.

Overall, the recovery period for buccal fat pad removal typically makes little impact on your lifestyle or responsibilities.

What side effects should you expect?

As with any form of surgery, buccal fat pad removal does lead to side effects. These include (but are not limited to):

  • Swelling in the cheek region may occur in the first two or three weeks after your buccal fat pad removal
  • Bruising can develop, though these will fade after a few days
  • Numbness and loss of sensation may occur around the incisions
  • Chewing may be a little difficult

What are the potential risks?

Undergoing buccal fat pad removal poses a number of potential risks:

  • Infection
  • Asymmetry in the cheeks
  • Too much or too little fat could be removed
  • Blood may clot in the tissue
  • Skin on the cheeks might pucker

There may be other potential risks involved. Dr. Adam Najem will discuss the possible problems that may occur during or after your buccal fat pad removal, and ensure you have all the information you need beforehand.

Will I be asleep during the procedure?

It’s vital that you discuss any allergic reactions to anaesthesia you may have had, no matter how minor they might appear to you. If you feel particularly uncomfortable about being awake during your buccal fat pad removal, you should raise your concerns with Dr. Najem too.
